Up here in Northern WI this is a critical time of year as the Loons start to arrive back home from their migration. When we get rain in combination with cold (sometimes freezing) temperatures, it causes Loons to have to crash land, and sometimes that isn’t in water. But if they aren’t in water, they can’t take off to fly because Loons require a long “runway” of 100 feet or more of water to become airborne. This is because their feet are positioned too far back on their bodies (used for efficient diving, not walking). Now that these are finally in Tammy and Jerry’s hands I can share ❤️ UW Wanderoos has always been a special place for Bryan and I - when we first met 10 years ago he told me “I’m from Wanderoos”, and I’ll be honest I didn’t know it existed😂 I sure do now! He was bartending there and it was a place of many Haugerud family gatherings. We played on the dart league, participated in Thursday bean bags, celebrity bartended a couple nights, and I played on the UW softball team. It was a place where a quick stop for a burger turned into an unplanned late night as rounds of drinks started appearing in front of you. It was a place for celebrating the big things—weddings, benefits, babies, and Packer games. Over the years, celebrations and ordinary nights blurred together, but the memories stuck—because if you were there, you became part of someone else’s story, raising a glass, or laughing with a familiar face you hadn’t expected to see. In a small community like ours, that’s what always happened—you’d walk in, spot someone you knew, and before you knew it, you were catching up over beers, picking up right where you’d left off. Tammy and Jerry built this community. They treat their employees with generosity and their customers like family, creating a space where everyone belonged. Regulars had their stools, newcomers were welcomed without question, and no one ever stayed a stranger for long. Though the original Wanderoo’s is gone, what made it special remains.
